On March 31st, my husband and I were invited to attend DIFFA’s “Smoking Haute” charity event….boy what an event it was (but I’ll save that for another post). It was so fun to get glammed up for a night focused on fun, fashion, and philanthropy. Here is what we wore on the red carpet and hopefully some tips and tricks that will help you get ready for your next special occasion (on a budget)….I managed to pull my whole look together in a few hours on the day of the event (let’s just say, I work very well under pressure and have had back to back to back events and can only manage to put one foot in front of the other sometimes).
The dress is BCBG Max Azria (retails for $370 but I got it at Half of Half for $79.99–only issue is that inside straps to hang it up were broken and it was missing that little hook that is at the top of the zipper). Underneath the dress (yes, I’ll go there) is a corset bra (the one I wore at our wedding) from Victoria’s Secret and a body shaper courtesy of Shapercise shapewear. Oh and my blow out is over 2 weeks old in this picture. Haute hubby is wearing tuxedo rented from The Men’s Wearhouse with only a 3 days notice.
After I bought the dress, I went to Charming Charlie because I knew that it would be a one-stop trip for accessories and they’d have everything else I needed thanks to their ultra-convenient color-coded sections. I love my jewelry to coordinate but not match exactly and I felt that the colors really played well with the dress. Everything pictured was $92 (not included my Handycam, just the sparkly strap–perfect for capturing DIFFA footage).
My final stop after buying my dress was to Walgreens cosmetics department for eyelashes and Sally Hansen Nail Effects. It was love at first sight when I saw these teal, oombre glitter nail strips and the fact that there would be no wait for them to dry was an added bonus.
I already owned the shoes (I’ve worn them before here). They are Carlos Santana via Half of Half. I had a pair of snakeskin ballet flats courtesy of Kushyfoot in my evening bag but by the time I was ready for them, we crashed in our hotel room.
So, that’s the look. More DIFFA coverage and a video with tips and tricks for special occasion dressing is on the way!
