I was turned on to “Made By Joel” yesterday by babble (one of my favourite parenting resources) and just fell head over heels in love with Joel and his creations. He is a very inspiring dad and one of the things I love about the internet is that everybody is an expert at something, and being able to share in this way can enlighten us all.
You really should just go to the site and thumb through, page by page until you get to the end but just in case you don’t, I’ve compiled a list of all the best activities that I can’t wait to tackle with my tot. There may even be one for every day until school starts and you can easily find most of the materials somewhere in your house or nearby. Get creative and have fun!
- Simple Handmade Books This was one of my favorite activities as a child and very easy to do without a sewing machine and there are endless possibilities for gifts, albums, scrapbook, leaf collections…..
- Paper Animals Sure, your house already feels like a zoo so why not add a few more animals to the mix?
- Vintage Buttons You really weren’t about to sew all those random buttons on tops you don’t remember anyway

- Finger Puppets just got a whole lot cooler! I can’t wait to try these with some of my fancy patterned paper (and my Dollar Tree construction paper).
- I love these trucks (that could also be made with cardboard/chipboard) and I mostly love that you can recycle those cute little Altoid tins!
- Modern Doll House You could easily buy wood pieces at the hobby store or use any other number of materials. It’s also very unisex. Furnishing it might be the most fun part

- These Slotted Building Discs would be great for traveling, church, restaurants, and could even make great homemade birthday presents.
- This Little Paper Cowboy is also great or all the reasons mentioned above.
- OMG! This spin on paper dolls is totally GENIUS! I need to sift through my old clothes to find scraps.
- Fishing Poles! Could also be dumbed down for those of use without spare wooden doodads.
- Downloadable coloring sheets (and that art show bird picture just gave me a great decorating idea for my boy’s playroom)
- Tin Can Phones This just brings back so many wonderful childhood memories.
- Cowboy Cut-outs with a printable template
- MayDay Flower Baskets Make these and then go on a scavenger hunt for things to fill them!
- Walnut Boats!!!!
- Printable (and colorable) Paper City
- Box Aquarium
- Driftwood Fish
- Paper City Helicopter because no city is complete without one
- Play Squares for Babies
- Paper City Vehicles
- Modern Alphabet Game
- Cereal Box Marble Run
- Modern Paper Mobile
- Blackfish Cafe Coloring Sheets
- Match Game
- PickUp Game
- Zipline Toy
- Vintage Wood Figures I always see those cool chess piece looking things in the wood section of the Hobby stores and now I can’t wait to buy some and make these!
Now, after you’ve done some projects, share them in the flickr photo pool (and go there for even more inspiring ideas. I can’t wait to share mine and would love to see yours too.
